Prayer is not just a one-way communication to God. An average Christian generally keeps talking to God, when he prays, He takes a lot of time to tell many things to God, makes several requests and shares all of his burdens to Him, He does not really listen to what God has to say. As a matter of fact, one should be more interested in hearing the voice of God than speaking to Him. After all, God knows our thoughts and what we are going to say before we say it. What is more important is to discern what God has in His mind and what He wants us to know. The communication or the message that we receive from God has a lot more value than what we tell Him.
What we may hear from God could fall under one of the following categories: -
1) An answer to our prayer by way of witness in our spirit
2) An assignment that God gives us
3) A revelation about the creator
4) An interpretation to a dream
5) A word of wisdom or knowledge
6) A prophecy for us or for others
7) An interpretation to a prophecy given in tongues
8) A desire in our heart for something good
9) A thought in our mind to pursue something
10) A warning of God
11) A signal from God telling us not to do something that we are planning to do
12) A word of comfort or encouragement
13) Some spiritual truth that will edify us spiritually
14) Some answer to our question for which we were seeking an answer
15) A solution to a problem that we are trying to solve
16) A strong conviction in our spirit either to do or to refrain from doing something
17) An approval from God for something that we want to do
18) A signal to go ahead and to do something which we were hesitating to do
19) A reminder of a scripture at an appropriate time.
